At Sustainable Stillwater MN (SSMN), we believe that art has the power to start conversations, build bridges, and inspire action. That’s why we’re proud to introduce Art Connects Community, a platform for people from all backgrounds throughout the St. Croix Valley to share their artistic concept of a place where we all thrive.
These works of art will be exhibited online and in the community, where we hope they will catalyze new connections and conversations that will inspire action and celebrate the many ways people envision a more resilient future. We invite artists of all backgrounds to share their vision of a thriving world.

This August, experience a vibrant collection of artwork from local artists showcased across three unique Stillwater venues. Each location offers a distinct atmosphere to connect with inspiring pieces that celebrate our shared relationship with the environment and community. Visit Matt’s Basement, Valley Bookseller, and Mike & Kat’s Other Place to immerse yourself in creativity and vision.
What’s your vision for a world where we all thrive?
The theme for Art Connects Community is the shared connection between people and our environment, inspired by Lady Bird Johnson’s powerful words:
"The environment is where we all meet; where we all have a mutual interest; it is the one thing all of us share. It is not only a mirror of ourselves, but a focusing lens on what we can become."
We invite everyone in the St. Croix Valley – professional artists and amateurs alike, of all ages – to create visual interpretations of this theme through painting, sculpture, photography, and other visual media. All artwork will be exhibited online, and selected works will also be displayed around the St. Croix Valley for several weeks. So get creative! In addition to offering exciting cash prizes, you’ll have the option to support SSMN by choosing to donate your artwork to the silent auction at our Fall Gala, helping us raise funds that will support our mission and work year-round.
