At Sustainable Stillwater MN, we recognize that our planet’s health is deeply interconnected—from the vast oceans to our local waterways. Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson, a renowned marine biologist, policy expert, writer, and teacher, has dedicated her career to creating a climate future that is both sustainable and just.

Dr. Johnson is the founder of Ocean Collectiv and Urban Ocean Lab, and she co-created the Blue New Deal—a transformative roadmap for including oceans in climate policy. Her work extends beyond academic research; she actively communicates the urgent need for environmental justice. In a widely read Washington Post op-ed, Dr. Johnson wrote,
“I’m a Black climate expert. Racism derails our efforts to save the planet… our racial inequality crisis is intertwined with our climate crisis.”
This powerful message challenges us to address both systemic racism and environmental degradation simultaneously. Dr. Johnson’s advocacy shows that effective climate policy must be inclusive and equitable, reflecting the diverse voices and experiences of those most impacted by environmental harm.
Her career spans a variety of influential roles—from developing federal ocean policies at the EPA and NOAA to mentoring the next generation of environmental leaders. Through her work, Dr. Johnson emphasizes that a healthy ocean is vital for our climate and that policies protecting marine ecosystems benefit all communities, even those far inland.
In Stillwater, MN, the lessons from Dr. Johnson resonate deeply. Although we are not a coastal community, our local waterways, lakes, and rivers play a crucial role in our regional ecosystem. By learning from Dr. Johnson’s integrative approach, Sustainable Stillwater MN is working to promote local water quality initiatives, educate our community on the importance of healthy ecosystems, and develop sustainable practices that mirror the interconnectedness of global environmental systems.
Dr. Johnson’s emphasis on communication and public engagement has inspired us to foster more inclusive dialogues around climate policy. Whether through public forums, school programs, or community workshops, her work reminds us that every voice matters in the fight for a sustainable future.
