Scientific breakthroughs lay the foundation for understanding and combating climate change. Dr. Warren Washington, an internationally renowned atmospheric scientist, has been a trailblazer in this field for decades. At Sustainable Stillwater MN, we celebrate his pioneering work as we look to apply scientific insights locally.

Celebrate Dr. Warren Washington

Dr. Washington’s career is defined by innovation. In the 1960s, he helped develop the first atmospheric computer models that use the fundamental laws of physics to predict future states of the atmosphere. These models have been essential in advancing our understanding of climate change and have directly influenced global policy decisions. His work has earned him numerous accolades, including the National Medal of Science and the Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement.

Growing up in Oregon during the 1940s and 1950s, Dr. Washington faced the challenges of segregation and witnessed firsthand the impacts of systemic injustice. His early experiences shaped his commitment to using science as a tool for social change. Not only did he contribute to groundbreaking climate models, but he also served as an advisor to five U.S. presidents, providing the scientific basis for policy decisions at the highest levels of government.

Dr. Washington’s contributions extend beyond his research. As one of the first African Americans to earn a doctorate in atmospheric sciences, he has been a mentor to countless young scientists, encouraging diversity in STEM fields. His work has paved the way for the next generation of researchers to approach climate science with a holistic, inclusive perspective.

Here in Stillwater, we value the role of scientific inquiry in our local sustainability efforts. Whether it’s monitoring local weather patterns, studying the impact of urban development on microclimates, or engaging with community science projects, Sustainable Stillwater MN draws inspiration from Dr. Washington’s legacy. His work reminds us that understanding the science behind climate change is essential for creating effective, informed policies at the local level.

Dr. Washington’s career is a testament to the power of perseverance, innovation, and the pursuit of justice through science. His groundbreaking research has not only deepened our understanding of Earth’s atmosphere but also highlighted the critical need for diversity in scientific fields.
