Event Recap: Be Bird Friendly – Land Stewardship for Bird Conservation

On Saturday, October 5th, 2024, we had a beautiful day at the Sally Manzara Interpretive Nature Center for a Walk & Talk on Land Stewardship for Birds. Though the wind gave us a little challenge, the energy and enthusiasm from participants made it a truly enriching experience!

Guided by experts from Wild Rivers Conservancy, the Sally Manzara Interpretive Nature Center, and Sustainable Stillwater MN / Bird City Stillwater, we explored ways to attract and protect local bird species through intentional land management.

Key Highlighted Practices:

  • Native Trees & Shrubs: Essential for providing food, shelter, and nesting areas.

  • Forest Layering: Creating a multi-layered habitat to support a variety of bird species.

  • Native Plants: Promoting biodiversity with bird-friendly flowers and grasses.

  • Water Features: Supporting birds with water for drinking and bathing.

  • Invasive Species Removal: Emphasis on removing buckthorn to restore native ecosystems.

As we walked through the property, participants got hands-on tips on incorporating these strategies in their own backyards. The combination of scenic trails and expert insights offered a perfect learning environment.

After the walk, we gathered indoors to explore an array of resources focused on bird conservation.

  • Displays on Window Collision Prevention: Reducing bird fatalities with window treatments.

  • Information on Bird-Safe Lighting: Tips on minimizing light pollution to protect migrating birds.

  • Take-Home Guides: Handouts with step-by-step instructions for building bird-friendly spaces at home.

The wind may have howled, but it didn’t dampen the lively conversations inside. Everyone left feeling inspired, informed, and ready to make their own spaces more welcoming for feathered friends!

A Big Thank You

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us and to our partners, Wild Rivers Conservancy and the Sally Manzara Interpretive Nature Center, for making this event a success. The collective knowledge shared and the time spent together walking the land truly embodied the spirit of stewardship.

We hope to see you at future events! Until then, let’s keep working to create safe, thriving habitats for birds in our community.
