At Sustainable Stillwater MN, we are proud to highlight the extraordinary efforts of Allison McGinnis, a passionate environmental advocate and the leader of our Bird City Stillwater Project. Allison brings an impressive combination of education, experience, and dedication to the table, making her an invaluable member of our nonprofit.

Allison’s journey began with a solid academic background in biology and environmental education. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Biology, with an emphasis on Ornithology and Environmental Education, from Bemidji State University. She furthered her expertise with graduate studies in Secondary Education at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. This robust educational foundation has equipped her with the knowledge and skills to inspire others and drive impactful environmental initiatives.


Allison’s professional journey spans decades, encompassing diverse roles that reflect her unwavering commitment to wildlife and environmental education. Her experience includes working as a biologist for the Trumpeter Swan Reintroduction Program, conducting bald eagle telemetry studies, and leading raptor education and training initiatives. She has also contributed to wolf studies, authored a groundbreaking paper on rehabilitating white-tailed deer fawns, and founded the St. Croix Valley Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Organization. These achievements underscore her deep connection to wildlife and her ability to lead complex projects with precision and passion.

Leadership in the Bird City Stillwater Project

As the lead coordinator for the Bird City Stillwater Project, Allison has been instrumental in advancing sustainable practices and promoting bird conservation within our community.


Here are just a few highlights of her impactful work:

  • Enhancing Habitat: Allison secured a Tropical Wings habitat grant for enhancements and plantings at Lily Lake Park and continues to collaborate with the city on buckthorn mitigation efforts.

  • Lights Out Initiative: She implemented the "Lights Out" program across the Stillwater area, leading to a city-wide proclamation to reduce light pollution and protect migratory birds.

  • Educational Outreach: Allison has organized bird hikes and tours, developed materials on birds and climate change, and facilitated community planting projects to engage and educate residents.

  • Collision Prevention: She spearheaded a window and glass collision prevention project to protect birds from fatal strikes.

  • Community Engagement: From organizing a bird festival in collaboration with local organizations to managing Bird City Stillwater’s social media presence, Allison’s efforts have brought together individuals, businesses, and agencies to champion bird conservation.

  • Recognition and Advocacy: In 2023, Allison was named Sustainable Stillwater MN’s Green Individual of the Year for her remarkable contributions to sustainability.

Growing up along the shores and banks of the St. Croix River, Allison developed a profound appreciation for the natural world. Her early experiences have fueled her lifelong dedication to environmental advocacy and education. Through her work, she has inspired countless individuals to foster a deeper connection with nature.
