There’s something special about the energy that spontaneous volunteers bring to Sustainable Stillwater MN’s Rain Garden Workgroup. Our recent session led by Ruth Alliband was a delightful reminder that when community members show up unexpectedly to lend a hand, meaningful change happens—often with a few joyful surprises along the way!
We were thrilled to welcome back Alexis, who’s quickly becoming a familiar face in our rain garden efforts. But this time, she brought reinforcements: her husband, John. Together, they tackled a tricky task—repositioning plants to improve the garden’s health and balance.
The queen-of-the-prairie (Filipendula rubra), a stunning sun-loving plant, was getting a little crowded on the southern edge of the garden. With careful hands, Alexis and John moved it to a sunnier spot where it could thrive. In its place, they relocated the dark purple ironweed (Vernonia fasciculata) to the heart of the garden, where it will shine without shading out its neighbors.
Their work is a testament to the power of pop-up volunteering—quick, intentional efforts that leave lasting impacts.
The spirit of volunteerism doesn’t stop with Alexis and John. Kelly, a passionate gardener who already maintains a plot on W. Wilkins Street, has stepped up to oversee the maintenance of two additional rain gardens on Third Street S.
These gardens are in great shape thanks to the efforts of two other spontaneous volunteers: Bella and Alexis (yes, the same Alexis!). Their willingness to jump in with no notice ensured the spaces were beautifully cleaned and ready for Kelly’s stewardship moving forward.
This session was more than just about moving plants—it was about moving people toward connection and care for their environment. Rain gardens do more than look beautiful. They reduce stormwater runoff, prevent erosion, and filter pollutants, helping our community stay resilient in the face of climate change. Every time a volunteer steps up, whether planned or spontaneous, they’re contributing to that resilience.
