Overview
This project aims to enhance local biking infrastructure by installing clear and safe bike lanes, improving overall accessibility for cyclists in Stillwater.
Key Actions
• Develop and implement bike lane designs on primary routes
• Collaborate with local authorities to ensure safety and proper marking
Education & Connection to Sustainability
Safe and accessible bike routes are fundamental to creating a sustainable, connected community. By encouraging cycling as a viable mode of transportation, this project reduces greenhouse gas emissions, lowers traffic congestion, and improves air quality. Street markings for bike lanes help protect cyclists, making biking safer and more appealing for daily commutes and leisure.
Clear, designated biking spaces also foster a healthier, more active lifestyle and support local economies by increasing access to small businesses. The project highlights how improved biking infrastructure aligns with the broader goals of environmental preservation and community well-being.
Project History
The Bicycle Friendly Community Street Marking project evolved from the Bicycle Friendly Community Workgroup, which has been advocating for improved biking conditions in Stillwater for years.
Key milestones include:
• 2019: Initial discussions about improving biking infrastructure, focusing on Complete Streets principles.
• 2021: Conducted a Bicycle Friendly Community survey to identify areas for improvement.
• 2022: Partnered with the city to prioritize primary routes for bike lane markings.
• 2023: Collaborated with local schools and businesses to increase awareness about the benefits of biking infrastructure.
Past efforts, such as the successful Bike to School Day and the Annual Bike Safety Rodeo, underscored the importance of safe and visible biking spaces. These successes have paved the way for implementing marked bike lanes across Stillwater.
