Overview

The Cigarette Litter Project seeks to reduce the amount of cigarette waste that pollutes the environment. By placing disposal units in key areas and educating the public, this project aims to create a cleaner, healthier community.

Key Actions

• Maintain disposal units for cigarette butts at strategic locations
• Develop a location map for the disposal units to encourage use
• Organize clean-up events to address cigarette litter in local parks and public spaces

Education & Connection to Sustainability

Cigarette litter is not just unsightly; it poses significant environmental and health risks. Cigarette butts are made from non-biodegradable plastic fibers that take years to break down, releasing toxic chemicals into the soil and waterways in the process. Educating the public on these harmful effects is essential to changing behaviors and fostering sustainable habits.

This project emphasizes the connection between personal responsibility and community well-being. By providing education on proper disposal and the impact of cigarette waste, we aim to inspire individuals to take small actions that collectively lead to a healthier, cleaner, and more sustainable environment. Public engagement through clean-up events and outreach helps to reinforce the importance of shared responsibility in creating a livable future for all.

Project History

The Cigarette Litter Project began with a mission to address the pervasive issue of cigarette waste in Stillwater. It was originally supported by a Keep America Beautiful grant in 2019, which funded the installation of cigarette disposal canisters throughout downtown Stillwater. Since then, the project has expanded its efforts to include maintenance of these canisters, educational outreach, and clean-up events in parks and public spaces.

Over the years, the project has built strong partnerships with local businesses, community members, and Sustainable Stillwater MN. These collaborations have been instrumental in reducing cigarette litter and raising awareness about its environmental impact. The project continues to evolve, driven by the dedication of volunteers and the support of the community.
